Kaltura - V2 Player Warning Indicator & Transition to V7 Player

Kaltura is the video portal for instructors, students, and staff across the Universities of Wisconsin. This article provides information regarding the end of support of the v2 video player at the Universities of Wisconsin (not Madison).

V2 Player Warning Indicator

You are seeing this warning indicator because the video you are playing uses the Kaltura V2 player. The vendor will discontinue support for this player on December 30, 2024. The indicator serves as a reminder to instructors to update course videos to avoid potential performance issues in the future.

Details About the Warning Indicator:

  • The warning is displayed in the upper left corner of the video.
  • It will only appear for the first 10 seconds of video playback.
  • This indicator is meant to help instructors quickly identify videos still using the outdated player.

What Instructors Need to Know About the End of V2 Player Support

  • End of Support Date: December 30, 2024
  • Functionality: Videos using the V2 player will continue to work for the foreseeable future, but the vendor will no longer be adding updates to the player or supporting technical problems.
  • Recommended Action: To ensure optimal video performance, we encourage instructors to upgrade course videos to the V7 player.  For more information on the benefits of upgrading please see this KB on the v7 Player Transition and this article on the upgraded features available in V7.

NOTE: While it is recommended instructors transition their videos to the new v7 player, it is not a required action. We fully anticipate v2 videos to continue working for students throughout upcoming semesters.  Additionally, tools to bulk transition all videos to the new v7 player are being tested and will be implemented system-when available.  While manually replacing videos is preferred, if this would cause undo burden, please know it is not mandatory.

How to Upgrade to the V7 Player

Updating videos is as easy as editing the Canvas page, discussion, announcement or quiz.  You just need to delete the original video and then click the multi-colored, asterisk-shaped, MyMedia icon on the editor toolbar to search for, and re-insert the desired video into your Canvas item.  This guide on adding videos to Canvas will provide step-by-step instruction.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Canvas support team on your campus.
