Canvas: Anonymous Grading in New Quizzes

Effective December 21, 2023, Instructors can enable Anonymous Grading in Canvas New Quizzes in the Universities of Wisconsin installations of Canvas. As noted in the November 18, 2023, Canvas Release Notes, enabling anonymous grading of manually graded question answers in New Quizzes helps reduce the perception of bias in grading. This change does not impact the University of Wisconsin-Madison installation of Canvas.

When creating or editing a new quiz, instructors and users in similar roles can enable Anonymous Grading by checking the Anonymous Grading box.

A checkbox next to the words "Graders cannot view student names"

Once enabled in a new quiz, the feature cannot be disabled for that quiz.

Student details are hidden on the Moderate page when Anonymous Grading has been enabled for a quiz. In addition, the Manage Current Attempt section in the individual student modal is hidden.

Student names and grades are hidden by default in SpeedGrader.

Once grades are posted, anonymity is removed.

The role permission that allows a user to enable anonymous grading in a quiz created with the New Quizzes tool is Manage Assignments and Quizzes.
