Kaltura (Captioning) - Adding Captions from External Sources
The University of Wisconsin System (except for UW Madison) offers several options for captioning Kaltura videos, including machine-generated captions and paid professional captions (for participating institutions). Sometimes a Kaltura video owner or co-editor has access to video captions from an external source, such as a third-party vendor. This guide explains how to upload captions from outside sources.
Adding Captions from External Sources
Kaltura video owners or co‑editors can upload caption files created outside of Kaltura (for example, manually created files or files from a captioning vendor such as 3Play).
A video owner or co‑editor can upload externally created caption files by following these steps:
- Go to Kaltura’s My Media.
- In Canvas: Canvas > Account > My Media.
- In Mediaspace (opens in new tab) : Guest > Login, then [Your Name] > My Media.

- Select a video from your My Media list.
- Below the video preview, open the Actions menu and select Edit.

- On the Edit screen, select the Captions tab, then click Upload Captions File.

- Select a captions file from your computer. Common formats include
.srt,.dxfp, and.vtt. - Enter the label text that will appear in the video player’s captions menu (for example, “English” or “Spanish”).
- Click Save.
