Digital Learning Environment (Privacy) - Are Canvas and Kaltura HIPAA compliant?
The Canvas and Kaltura implementations in the University of Wisconsin System Digital Learning Environment (DLE) are designed to safeguard student privacy, but they are NOT designed with the additional privacy protections necessary to safeguard patient medical records or protected health information. These DLE technologies have not been configured to be HIPAA compliant and should not be used to store or transmit HIPAA-sensitive information.
Programs whose curriculum involves internships, practicums, and other experiences where students and instructors may work with protected health information should take care to not share this information within the Digital Learning Environment or should seek out HIPAA-compliant alternatives designed to handle this information.
If a student submits any work such as discussion contributions or assignments that violate the HIPAA Privacy Rule, the instructor should contact Canvas support and ask that the support agent delete the assignment.
For background on HIPAA, see the US Department of Health and Human Services guide: Summary of the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
