We have become aware of an issue where some student submissions to Canvas Assignments may not display the correct word count, which can negatively impact the grades of students (where wordcount is a criterion).

Submissions are impacted when:

  • The Assignment submission is a PDF and
  • The source document uses Aptos as the font.

Instructor Workaround:

You may wish to open PDFs in Microsoft Word (This may not work depending on the nature of the PDF submitted by the student) and utilize the word count tool in Microsoft Word: Opening PDFs in Word - Microsoft Support.

Student Workarounds:

  • Do not submit a PDF for Canvas assignments until the issue is fixed with the grading tool called Speedgrader
  • Do not use Aptos as a font in submissions.

We anticipate that this issue will be resolved in a future update to the Canvas LMS.
