On 08/09/22, a change was made to prevent Kaltura from automatically adding machine-generated tags to videos on the University of Wisconsin System (except for UW Madison) instance of Kaltura. Videos which already have tags will keep those tags, and users can still manually add tags to videos if they are the owner or co-editor.
By default, Kaltura adds machine-generated tags when a video is captioned. The UW System (except for UW Madison) instance of Kaltura began automatically providing machine captions for all new Kaltura videos in December 2021, which had a side effect of automatically adding tags to the videos.
Users have since complained that Kaltura adds too many machine-generated tags to each video, that these tags are low-quality, and that the tags don't add much searchability. Those users made a change request, which was reviewed by the Digital Learning Environment Service Team, the UW Kaltura Admin Group, and other appropriate stakeholders. It was ultimately approved.
