On 05/10/22, changes were made to allow instructors to set up rules for automatically ordering captions for Kaltura videos added to the Media Gallery of a Canvas course in the University of Wisconsin System (except for UW Madison) instance of Canvas.

These changes were made by editing KAF REACH settings to add "Channel Managers" to the "Category Rule Order Role."

One use case for the new permissions would be for a foreign language instructor teaching a Canvas course with Kaltura videos in a language other than English to use these new settings to automatically order machine captions in another language for any video added to their course Media Gallery.

Instructors can do this by navigating to Media Gallery in their Canvas course navigation, clicking on the hamburger-shaped Channel Actions menu, then selecting Services Ordering Rules option.

A few notes about the process:

  • Caption ordering rules only apply to the Media Gallery of a single Canvas course. Instructors must set up rules in each course separately.
  • Instructors can set up rules for automatically ordering any type of caption that they already have permissions to order (typically machine-generated captions in a variety of languages).
  • Caption ordering rules apply to Kaltura videos added to the Media Gallery after the rule is set up. These rules don't retroactively apply to videos already in the course Media Gallery, and they do not apply to videos embedded in course pages but not added to the Media Gallery.
