2021 DLE Student Usability Study
In 2021, a student usability study of the UWS digital learning environment (DLE) was conducted.
The purpose of the research is to examine the student user experience (UX) with the digital learning environment (DLE) and identify factors that influence student access and success across the University of Wisconsin System.
The study design incorporated mixed method data collection techniques, such as survey methods and focus groups. Instrumentation (including student survey and focus group interview schedules) was developed using previously validated questions and survey items and informed through an environmental scan of existing research. UWS stakeholders were also engaged in study question/topic development.
In considering the challenges faced and addressed due to COVID-19, research results provides guidance on understanding the student experience with the digital learning environment, including the student's user experience in navigating the DLE, identifies gaps and barriers to a satisfactory user experience when using the tools within the DLE, determines what actions or course design elements prompt a student to access and interact with course content (e.g., is it a reaction to a notification, a To Do list item, assignment/quiz due, calendar entry, etc.),and evaluates the effectiveness of the DLE in supporting the student mobile experience.
A unique survey link was sent via a Canvas message to all undergraduate students at UW System institutions, except UW-Madison. Survey distribution began Friday, April 30 and the survey remained open until May 14, 2021. The research protocol was granted IRB Exempt Status under Category 1 as governed by 45 CFR 46.104(d) and is led by Tanya Joosten, Ph.D. The study was conducted by the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA).
