Microsoft Office (Windows) - Recovering Unsaved Work

This document describes the process of locating unsaved work in Microsoft Office.

Office 2011 (Windows)

  1. Go to File > Recent.

  2. At the bottom of the Recent Places section, click Recover Unsaved Documents.

    NOTE: The name of this button will vary depending on which Office application you are using. For example, the button is called Recover Unsaved Workbooks in Excel and Recover Unsaved Presentations in Powerpoint.

  3. This will bring you to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles or C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles. Any unsaved documents should be in this location. Select the desired document and click Open.

Office 2013 & 2016 (Windows)

  1. Click File in the upper right corner, then click Open.

  2. At the bottom of the Recent Documents list, click Recover Unsaved Documents.
