Aerosol Generating Activities
When choosing more than one containment option for an activity, explain when the different forms of containment are used in the “Containment More Than One” section. The table below includes examples for activities when multiple containment options have been selected.
Activity |
Activity Other |
Containment |
Containment Other |
Containment More Than One |
---|---|---|---|---|
Surgery/tissue, organ, cell harvest/necropsy |
Performed on lab bench, no containment used; BSC |
|
Surgery, tissue, organ, cell harvest, and necropsies are performed in the BSC for mice administered virus. Surgery for untreated mice may be performed on the lab bench. |
|
Blending, sonicating, homogenizing, of electroporation |
|
Performed on lab bench, no containment used; BSC |
|
RG1 microbes are handled on the lab bench. |
Animal inoculations |
|
BSC; Other |
Performed outside of containment in animal procedure room |
RG1 microbes are handled on the lab bench. |
Opening culture plates, ampoules, tubes |
|
Performed on lab bench, no containment used; BSC |
|
RG1 microbes are handled on the lab bench. |
Flaming inoculating needles, slides, or loops |
|
Performed on lab bench, no containment used |
Flaming is only performed with RG1 microbes, not in a BSC |
|
Animal cage changes |
Performed on lab bench, no containment used; BSC |
|
Cage changes for mice that have been administered virus or human cells must be performed in the BSC. Cage changes for untreated transgenic mice may be conducted on the lab bench. |
|
Vortexing |
|
BSC; Performed on lab bench, closed containers |
|
Vortexing is only performed with closed containers. |
Pipetting |
|
Performed on lab bench, no containment used; BSC |
|
RG1 microbes are pipetted on the lab bench. All pipetting of RG2 microbes, human materials (cell culture/tissues), or biological toxins are performed in the BSC |
Biological Materials Outside of Containment
If any activity in the “Aerosol Generating Activities” section is performed without containment on the benchtop, it should be addressed in this section. A brief description of the work being done and the agents worked with is sufficient. For instance, “All culturing and plasmid prep of E. coli K12 will be performed outside of containment.”
Flow Cytometry Containment
For work performed at the UW Carbone Cancer Center flow cytometry laboratory, contact the staff to determine what type of containment is appropriate for the materials you are sorting. https://cancer.wisc.edu/research/resources/flow/
