This document details application vendor support for Windows 7 and the results of software compatibility testing with the Windows 7 operating system. All applications were tested on a fresh Windows 7 build, not an upgrade installation from Windows XP or Vista.

Purpose

This document attempts to document the Windows 7 compatibility for applications of importance to the UW-Madison community.

Please note that some applications may require updates in order to be fully compatible with Windows 7. If you have specific questions regarding the Windows 7 compatibility of an application you use, please visit the application vendor's website for further information.

Internet Explorer 8

Windows 7 ships with Internet Explorer 8 by default, however, Microsoft officially ended support for Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10 as of January 12, 2016.

For security reasons, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade to Internet Explorer 11. If you encounter issues when using IE 11 with campus applications, you can often resolve them by enabling Compatibility View per [Link for document 35591 is unavailable at this time].

Windows 7 32-bit vs 64-bit

Unless otherwise noted, the compatibilities described below are for the 32-bit version of Windows 7. You may encounter additional compatibility issues not described below if you plan to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7.
