MS Edge - Enable Internet Explorer Compatibility Mode

Here are the steps for enabling MS Internet Explorer mode in the Edge browser. It is recommended to use IE mode only when accessing those websites that required it.

Note: These steps will involve restarting the browser so save any work before proceding.

Enabling Internet Explorer mode in MS Edge

  1. Launch Microsoft Edge.

  2. Open the drop down menu (1) by clicking the 3 dots on the upper right corner.

  3. Click Settings (2).

  4. In the left column, click Default browser (3).

  5. In the “Internet Explorer compatibility” section, set the toggle switches to

    • Recommended (4) and
    • to Allow (5) for “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode” toggle switch

  6. The RESTART (6) option may be displayed; if so, click on to restart the browser.

  7. If the RESTART (6) option is not displayed, close and restart the browser to enable the new settings.

Using the Internet Explorer mode

Enabling a website in IE mode:

  1. Open a website in Edge and right-click the session tab.

  2. Click on the Reload tab selection to enter IE mode.

  3. An information screen will be displayed:

    • enable compatibility mode for this session (1)
    • enable to compatibility mode for future sessions (2)

  4. Click to enter Internet Explorer compatibility mode.
  5. A reminder that IE compatibility is enabled will be displayed

  6. Click on the Open in Microsoft Edge button to exit Internet Explorer Mode
