Adobe Photoshop- Crop Tool

These instructions will show you how to crop images both with and without deleting the cropped pixels.

Crop Tool

The crop tool is fantastic for removing unwanted areas of images and scaling images to fit a specific ratio for printing or viewing on the web.

Destructive and Non-Destructive Cropping

The default setting for the Crop tool allows the tool to delete part of your image you have cropped out. This would cause a destructive change to your image.

To change the Crop tool to a non-destructive tool, uncheck Delete Cropped Pixels from the top menu bar. This can be done at any time prior to finalizing the crop selection.

To Crop:

  1. Select the Crop tool from your tool menu on the left side of the interface. The Crop tool can also be selected from the Image menu, or by pressing the C key on your keyboard.
  2. Creating your selection:
  3. Custom sizes can be created by clicking once on the image then clicking and dragging the black bars located on the corners and edges of the image. Another option is to click and drag anywhere within the image.
  4. Ratios can be selected if you would like your image to fix a particular size.
  5. On the top menu bar, click the dropdown menu on the Ratio button to find a list of common ratios.
  6. Select a ratio by clicking on it.
  7. Resize by clicking and dragging like in step 2.1.
  8. To finalize the crop, select the ✓ from the top menu, or by pressing the Return or Enter key on a keyboard.
  9. If Delete Cropped Pixels was checked, the image will remain a background image in the Layers panel. After you save, the pixels cropped from the image will be deleted.
  10. If Delete Cropped Pixels was unchecked, the image will become a layer in the Layers panel. As long as you save the image as a Photoshop file or TIFF with layers, the cropped pixels will still remain in the file.
