Upgrading to macOS Catalina
Process for upgrading to macOS Catalina and the precautions to consider before doing so.
macOS Catalina is available for your downloading and installing pleasure in our Managed Software Center (MSC). You can find it by clicking on the banner on the opening page of MSC, by searching for it in the Search box, by looking under the “Operating Systems” category in MSC, or by just clicking the plus next to it on the Updates listing in MSC. Or even by clicking right here. Please note: you must be running Munki Tools version 5.0 or newer in order to see the Catalina installer within MSC. If you have a Munki Tools update sitting in your MSC queue, trying installing that and then checking again for Catalina.
You need not be on campus in order to perform the upgrade, though utilizing the speed of our network would be beneficial for quickly getting the 8+ GB installer.
Things to be aware of:
• Verify all the already-installed applications necessary for your work/class/research/etc are 64-bit ready. Use our “32-Bit App Lister” to do so. Applications that are only 32-bit will not run under macOS Catalina and there is nothing we can do to make them run.
• UW Oshkosh I&T will NOT be performing downgrades with full user data restoration to macOS Mojave in the event of buyer’s remorse.
• The upgrade process will take at least 40 minutes.
At this time, and for the immediately foreseeable future, nobody will be forced to upgrade to macOS Catalina. Catalina is an “opt-in” by the user. Catalina will not become a mandatory upgrade until Apple stops releasing Security Updates for macOS Mojave, which is estimated to occur October 2021.
Additionally, please confirm with the manufacturer of your favorite, necessary software titles to see if macOS Catalina is right for you.
