How to get remote access to computers

This document explains how to gain remote access to computers in the lab.

In order to get permission to use remote access, the lab P.I. must send an email to help@waisman.wisc.edu stating that they would like to give this person access to whichever computers.

To get started, you'll need two things installed on your home PC. You'll need the campus VPN client (Palo Alto Global Protect), and you'll need a copy of Microsoft Remote Desktop. Additionally, you must complete the workaround found here: https://kb.wisc.edu/smng/internal/100257. Do not remote in to computers until you have completed this step.
  1. Install the VPN client (Palo Alto Global Protect)
    • WINDOWS:
      • Log in with your NetID and Password.
      • Click on the link to download the 64-bit GlobalProtect Agent.
      • Save it on your PC, then install it.
      • When you first start it, it will ask for your portal address. Use this address: uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu
      • For more in-depth directions, see https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=73116.
    • MACINTOSH:
      • Log in with your NetID and Password.
      • Click on the link to download the 64-bit GlobalProtect Agent.
      • Follow the instructions on https://kb.wisc.edu/73116 to complete the installation
      • When you first start it, it will ask for your portal address. Use this address: uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu
      • Depending on the version of the Macintosh operating system you have installed, you may need to take an extra step to successfully install the VPN.
  2. Install Microsoft Remote Desktop
    • WINDOWS:
      • If you use Windows on your home computer, Microsoft Remote Desktop is already installed on all modern versions of Windows. You can find it by clicking on your Start menu and typing the word "Remote".
    • MACINTOSH:
      • If you are using a Macintosh, Microsoft Remote Desktop is a free download in the Macintosh App Store.
      • There are two versions currently available; get "Microsoft Remote Desktop 10".
  3. Logging into the VPN
    • Log in to the campus via the WISC VPN service. This login is with your NetID (e.g. bbadger).
  4. Logging into your computer with Remote Desktop
