Advanced Content Authoring and Reporting - CSCR Alternative Tools (UW-Madison)
This document outlines alternative tools to the now deprecated Case Scenario Critical Reader (CSCR) tool at UW-Madison.
Campus leadership and subject matter experts have conducted an extensive review of the CSCR replacement recommendation. After careful consideration of pedagogical and support needs, functionality, sustainability and affordability, we have decided to provide the following options, which we believe best meet the needs of campus, faculty and instructors, at this time.
Basic CSCR Activities
Faculty and instructors are able to create or recreate modules with the following tools:
The Learn@UW-Madison team is continuing to research and evaluate different content authoring tools, which may replace these currently recommended tools in the future. For this and other reasons, we recommend authoring basic course content in Canvas whenever possible.
CSCR Activities with Advanced Reporting
For CSCR activities with advanced reporting capabilities, we recommend that faculty and instructors use Canvas with Storyline for Case Scenario activities and Pressbooks (with H5P and Hypothes.is) for Critical Reader activities. Both of these tools require advanced integrations to be set up by Learn@UW-Madison for learner activity data to be recorded and accessed.
Adobe Captivate was also tested, but Learn@UW-Madison's pilot study revealed concerns around accessibility and accessing learning analytic data. Therefore, Adobe Captivate is not recommended as a replacement tool for creating these kinds of E-Learning Objects.
1. Case Scenarios
For faculty and instructors who wish to create or recreate Case Scenario modules using Storyline:
Articulate 360 licenses need to be purchased by departments in order to author modules.
General support and administration of Storyline is provided by Articulate via their technical support portalas part of the Articulate 360 Teams licenses. The Learn@UW-Madison team will also provide support to end users, particularly focusing on the integrations required for advanced reporting of learner activity data.
To record and access learner activity data from the modules (e.g., student interaction with content, answers to questions, and scores), Learn@UW-Madison will need to set up integrations between the Storyline module, Grassblade, Learning Locker, and Canvas.
Learn@UW-Madison provides full end-to-end support to assist faculty and staff in setting up and using these integrations. This will include providing documentation and in-person consultations to assist faculty and staff in setting up the integrations. School, college, and department instructional technologists will be responsible for providing any additional end-user support.
For faculty and instructors who wish to create or recreate Critical Reader modules using Pressbooks:
The Learn@UW-Madison team administers Pressbooks as a central service.
To record and access learner activity data from the modules (e.g., student interaction with content, answers to questions, and scores), certain integrations need to be set up.
Learn@UW-Madison provides full end-to-end-support to assist faculty and staff in setting up and using the integrations. This includes providing documentation and in-person consultations. School, college, and department instructional technologists will be responsible for providing any additional end-user support.
We recognize these options are complex and require a collaborative effort from campus, schools/colleges, and departments to provide satisfactory support faculty and instructors. Please refer to the table below for more information regarding each tool.
A good option for creating case scenarios; not recommended for recreating critical readers.

Support for Storyline is provided directly by Articulate and is covered as part of the license.
