UW-Madison Box (Safari) - No Files or Folders Appear in the Folder Uploader
If you are attempting to use the Box folder uploader in Safari, you may find that you cannot browse your files and folders in the uploader window. This document describes how to modify your Safari preferences to correct this issue.
There is a known issue in Safari that affects the Java plug-in in the Box folder uploader (accessed by logging into Box and clicking Upload > Upload Folders). The problem occurs after clicking the Add files button and can manifest in several different ways, depending on the version of Safari and Java you have installed.
Generally, you may find that only your top level of folders is visible (e.g. Users or Home folder), or that your folders may be marked with a red "access denied" symbol, as shown below:
This issue can be permanently fixed by allowing the Java plug-in to run in "Unsafe Mode" in the Box web client. Please note that this will not apply to any other websites.
In Safari, click on the Safari menu and select Preferences.
Under the Security tab, click the Manage Website Settings... button.
Select Java in the left pane of the window. In the Configured Websites pane, look for the entry for uwmadison.app.box.com. Click on the dropdown menu and select Run in Unsafe Mode.
A pop-up will appear asking for confirmation; click Trust. In the main window, click Done.
Re-launch the Box folder uploader. You should now be able to browse all of your files and folders.
- Note: You will continue to receive a standard security prompt asking Do you want to run this application?, which is normal. If you see this pop-up, click Run.
