Learn@UW/D2L - Issues with the Document Viewer

This document describes the current known issues with the Document Viewer.

The Document Viewer is used to view various types of files used as Content topics and Dropbox submissions uploaded into Dropbox folders. Microsoft Word and PowerPoint documents, pdf documents, and image files are included among the many file types that are opened by the Document Viewer when viewed.

There are some known issues when viewing specific files with the Document Viewer, especially Microsoft Word documents:

  • Some special fonts are not properly rendered in Word documents.  Entirely different characters may be displayed.  These include the 'Pepper' font used to display diacritical marks and phonetic symbols, the 'Wing Ding 2' font used to display various symbols such as circled numbers, and likely others.

  • Some items in charts in Microsoft Word 2007 or later documents (.docx files) do not display. These include trend line equations, certain trend lines, and data for certain line charts. They do however display in Microsoft Word 1997-2003 documents (.doc files).

  • The quality of certain images may be low.  Documents that mix photographs and text likely will not render in the Document Viewer at the resolution of the original document.

If you encounter any of the above issues, the following workarounds are available:

  • Download the file onto your machine where it can be properly viewed.

  • Use a pdf file (.pdf) instead of a Word file (.docx or .doc). The Document Viewer correctly renders pdf files. Students can save the Word document as a pdf document before submitting to a Dropbox folder. Instructors can save the Word document as a pdf document before uploading to use as a Content topic.

  • In the case where items in charts in .docx files don't display, you can save as .doc files and use these.
