Staffing/Administrative Update

Lil Larson has resigned as the Director of the ED/SBS IRB. Our office is very sad that she is gone and express our heartfelt thanks for her abundant expertise and guidance she has provided not only to the IRB staff but to the campus as a whole.  Casey Pellien, who has been an Assistant Director of the ED/SBS IRB Office for over five years, will be stepping in as Interim Director.  

As of August 1st, the ED/SBS IRB is being run by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE).  Although we are now administratively managed by OVCRGE, the location of the IRB office will not be changing. 

Upcoming ARROW Updates in Fall 2017
  • First Phase of Streamlining Administrative Section of the Initial Review Form: The first section of all application forms submitted to the ED/SBS IRB includes a number of administrative questions. This section of the form is being revised in phases to simplify it and leverage other data systems on campus to provide relevant information rather than asking study teams to do so. These changes will help streamline the application and make it more user-friendly for researchers. Future changes will include updates to how people are listed in the application as well as how funding information is requested.
  • Self-Serve Removal of Study Team Members: To remove personnel, study teams currently need to submit a personnel change. Coming this fall, researchers will be able to use a self-serve system to remove study team members (not including the PI) from an application without needing to submit a personnel change to the IRB. Given the large number of personnel changes submitted to and reviewed by the IRB each year, this new feature will have a significant impact on reducing administrative burden.
  • Streamlined Continuing Review Form: In tandem with pending regulatory changes, the continuing review form is being revised to shorten it and provide better branching so study teams see questions that only apply to their type of research. This will make the continuing review process more efficient and less time-consuming for study teams.
Training and Outreach Sessions

The ED/SBS IRB office offers an outreach/training curriculum throughout the year.  We hold various training sessions tailored to a particular topic.  The following are the upcoming trainings for Fall 2017:

  • *NEW* Meet & Greet on September 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137
This NEW Fall 2017 event offers the chance to become more familiar with the ED/SBS IRB office and staff.  All are welcome, but individuals new to research or UW-Madison are strongly encouraged to attend!  There will be a short presentation at 10:30 AM, followed by informal/drop-in time to interact one-on-one with IRB Staff for introductions and any questions about the IRB process.  Light refreshments will be provided.  Please note that registration for this event is encouraged to help gauge numbers for refreshments, but not required for attendance.
  • *NEW* Upcoming ARROW Updates on September 26 at 2 p.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137
This new session for Fall 2017 will focus on significant updates that will be coming to ARROW in October.  Updates that will be covered include a self-service activity for the removal of personnel, changes to the requirements for continuing review, revisions to the continuing review form, and the reorganization of the first section of the initial review application.  All these updates are being made in an effort to provide a more streamlined process for study teams.
  • IRB 101: An Introduction to the IRB on October 4 at 10:00 a.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137
  • IRB 103: How to Avoid Delays in the IRB Approval Process on November 9 at 2 p.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137
  • IRB 200: Consent Considerations on December 6 at 10 a.m. in Lathrop Hall, Room B137

Another facet of our curriculum is tailored outreach sessions for classes, groups, or departments.  IRB staff would be happy to come to a department meeting, research methods class, or hold a brown bag session to help faculty, staff, students, and other researchers learn more about the IRB process.  We can also address specific topics such as international research, research on campus, research with minors, technology-based research, etc.  To schedule an outreach event, please visit the Outreach Sessions page of our website.

Whether you have questions about a specific protocol, have general questions, or need help getting started, there are many ways to contact the ED/SBS IRB office.
  • For questions regarding a specific protocol, contact the assigned Staff Reviewer.  Instructions for identifying the Staff Reviewer are located here.
  • Drop-in hours are every Wednesday from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and Thursday from 10:00-11:00 a.m.  The IRB staff are located on the 3rd floor of Lathrop Hall (take the west elevator or stairs).
  • IRB staff have 12-month appointments and are available for meetings/consults year-round.  Individual appointments can be scheduled throughout the week.  Contact an IRB staff member to schedule an appointment.  Contact information is available here.
