Microsoft 365 (Thunderbird) - Tags/Categories

Categories in Thunderbird are called Tags. Tags are one way to organize and prioritize emails. You can use default tags or you can create your own.

Important: Tags created within Thunderbird will not be synced to your Microsoft 365 account. These tags will only be available within Thunderbird.

Add a tag to an email
  1. Open Thunderbird
  2. Right click on the email you want to tag
  3. Highlight the Tag menu

  4. From the list click on the tag you want to give your email

  5. Your email will now appear the color of the tag in your inbox (or other folder)

Add email tags to inbox view
  1. Open Thunderbird
  2. Right click on the bar along the top of the inbox where you see Subject, From, Date
  3. A list will appear with all possible options
  4. Select or deselect the options you wish/do not wish to see/sort by in your inbox view

    select the Tag option within your view setting

  5. To add Tags, be sure the Tag option is checked
  6. Now you can sort by Tag, for more on sorting see this page

Modify Tags
  1. Open Thundebird
  2. Along the top bar of the mail window, select Tag

  3. From the drop down menu, select Manage Tags

  4. In this pop up box you can edit the name and color of tags, as well as add additional tags

  • Edit a Tag - Highlight the tag you wish to edit and select Edit. Change the name of the tag by typing in the box, change the color by clicking on the colored box and choosing the desired color.
  • Add a tag - Click the Add button, type a name for your tag in the box and select a color by clicking on the colored box and choosing your desired color
  • Delete a tag - Highlight the tag you wish to delete, click the Delete button.
