InterPro - Teaching & Learning - Tools & Technology - Zoom Polls and Quizzes
Engage online students by delivering and sharing results of polls and quizzes created within the Zoom video conferencing tool.
Zoom Polls & Quizzes
Description
Zoom polls and quizzes are created directly within the Zoom platform to allow a meeting host, co-host, or alternative host to gather information from and share information with meeting participants to increase student engagement. Polls and quizzes may be created prior to (recommended) or during a Zoom meeting and reused in future meetings. Standard polls contain only single choice and multiple choice question types. Advanced polls contain six additional question types, allow uploaded images, and have the option to set correct responses for each question, turning an advanced poll into an advanced quiz.
Access
To utilize the Zoom polls and quizzes feature, access the Zoom web portal via https://uwmadison.zoom.us Log in to Zoom with your UWNet ID and password. Do not use the Canvas-Zoom integration for this process as it has less functionality.
Enable Zoom polls and quizzes
Use the Zoom web portal to navigate to Settings. Under the Meeting tab, scroll down to or click on In Meeting (Basic) to jump to the In Meeting (Basic) settings.
Within the In Meeting (Basic) settings section, scroll down and locate Meeting Polls/Quizzes. Toggle the switch to "on." Secondary meeting polls/quizzes options are listed and described below.
1️⃣ Check this box to allow the host to create advanced polls and quizzes. If this box is not checked the meeting host will be able to create standard polls (not quizzes) with single-choice or multiple-choice questions only. Advanced polls and quizzes offer more question types and the option to set correct answers for the quizzes you create.
2️⃣ Check this box if you would like the option to upload an image into poll or quiz questions. Uploaded images must be either a JPEG or PNG with a maximum size of 2 MB.
3️⃣ Check this box to allow an alternative host to add, edit, or download polls and quizzes during a meeting.
4️⃣ Check this box if you want all responses to be anonymous and prevent names from appearing in quiz/poll reports. Students will not see names associated with responses during a meeting regardless of whether or not this box is checked.
5️⃣ Check this box if you would like to create breakout rooms during the meeting based on how students respond to polls.
After making any changes to these settings, click Save.

Application and Limitations
Zoom polls and quizzes are used to engage learners and increase active online learning. Zoom polls allow instructors to capture and share information with students, creating the opportunity to build community for remote learners. Zoom quizzes offer instant feedback to instructors and learners about submitted student responses.
- You can create a maximum of 50 polls for a meeting. Each standard poll may contain up to 10 questions and each advanced poll/quiz may contain up to 50 questions.
- Only the original meeting host, by default, can edit or add polls during a meeting. Transferring the host or co-host role to another user will allow that user to launch polls that have already been created only. An alternative host can add or edit polls, but the host must enable this setting when selecting the alternative host.
- Only five of the eight available advanced quiz question types can generate immediate feedback. These question types are single choice, multiple choice, ranking, matching, and fill in the blank. The three question types that cannot supply immediate feedback are short answer, long answer, and rating scale.
Zoom client version requirements:
Feature | Zoom Client Version Requirement |
---|---|
Allow host to add polls before or during a meeting | 3.5.63382.0829 or later |
Allow host to create advanced polls and quizzes | Users below version 5.8.3 will not be able to view or participate in advanced polls |
Allow host to upload image for each question | 5.8.3 or later |
Allow alternative host to add or edit polls and quizzes | Zoom client version 5.8.0 or later and Android client version 5.8.3 or later |
Avoid these Pitfalls
- Ensure the meeting polls/quizzes feature is enabled in the Zoom meeting settings prior to beginning the meeting. Once it is enabled, you will see Polls/Quizzes as a separate Meetings tab.
If this tab is not visible, the polls/quizzes feature is not enabled. If only the word Polls appears here, only standard polls (not advanced polls/quizzes) are enabled.
- Well in advance of starting the meeting, ensure the polls/quizzes you need will be accessible within the meeting.
- Click the title of the prescheduled meeting you wish to start from your list of upcoming meetings.
- Verify that the polls or quizzes you need for this meeting are available under the Polls/Quizzes tab near the bottom of the page. The example below shows a meeting with two available polls/quizzes.
3. If no polls/quizzes appear in this list, none will be available after the meeting has started. To avoid this, choose any one of the following:
-
-
-
- Click the + Create button shown above and create a poll or quiz for this meeting.
- Select a premade poll/quiz from the poll library.
- Schedule a new meeting using a Zoom meeting template that includes the polls and quizzes you need. Share with your participants how to access new meetings.
-
-
- Polls and quizzes may be relaunched (reused) within the same meeting. Doing so will overwrite the original results. If you need to keep the original results, either download them before relaunching the poll/quiz or use a duplicate poll/quiz (recommended).
Poll and Quizzes Best Practices
- Polls and quizzes should be only long enough to fulfill their purpose. In other words, keep them short and topical.
- Keep the poll questions simple and correct sources of possible question misinterpretation.
- Write polling questions that will benefit the learner's experience. For example a poll or quiz may help build community, determine learning gaps, increase learner confidence, etc.
- Let students know how to interact with the polls or quizzes, whether or not their responses will be anonymous, how long they will have to complete it, and if you will share the poll results or correct quiz answers with them.
- Prior to the meeting, determine the appropriate number of polls/quizzes and their placement throughout your meeting for maximum impact.
- Use the information gathered from polls/quizzes to direct instruction or enhance learner experience.
